CALLED TO ACTION

The Broward County Children’s Strategic Plan (BCCSP) was a product of the Children’s Summit held in Broward County in 1999. The Broward Benchmarks provided guidance in identifying community concerns, many of them stemming from broad and deep systemic societal issues, such as poverty and its consequences, as well as family and community dynamics and their impacts on children. The County Commission formally approved the plan on February 19, 2002. Based on the Hawkins and Catalano “Communities That Care” (CTC) model, the plan sets the vision, mission, goals and objectives for establishing a better community in which children live, learn, and thrive. The 2017 Youth Summit convened at the Broward Convention Center on February 21, 2017. Service providers, advocates, youth, and Broward residents participated in fostering and coordinating many planning initiatives for Broward County. The Summit also celebrated the progress made toward meeting benchmarks set out in the Children’s Strategic Plan since it began in 1999.

“The Community Called & We Answered!”

RESPONSE

A Collective Impact approach was taken to implement the plan. Strategic Plan Committees were formed consisting of public & private entities, government, faith-based organizations, and community residents who meet frequently to share data, strategies/best practices, accomplishments, and activities concerning children and families in Broward County. Using the Results-Based Accountability (RBA) framework, this information is summarized into a Turn the Curve Report that is submitted to the Leadership Coalition, which consists of Broward’s policy advisory entities. The Leadership Coalition provides a platform for policy change and funding recommendations to be made.
